Twelve Catalan newspapers published a joint editorial last Thursday in which they defend the legality of Catalonia’s statute of autonomy. The statute — meant to clarify the division of political powers between Spain and Catalonia — is under review by Spain’s constitutional court.

Costa Brava News:
A 16-year-old Dutch schoolgirl has been killed in an accident involving a coach in northern Spain. Two other school children are seriously injured and 17 passengers are slightly injured.
The coach was carrying teachers and pupils from a secondary school, Canisius College, in the southern Dutch city of Nijmegen to Barcelona, when it turned over on the A7 motorway near the city of Gerona in north-east Spain. [video]

In Blanes work is underway on the repair and upgrading of S’Abanell — one of the beaches most affected in last year’s devastating December storm. Over the next two or three weeks, 250.000 cubic meters of sand will return the beach to its pre-storm size.

In the 39th edition of the Concurso de Fuegos de Artificio de la Costa Brava, some 7 tons of explosives were used over a six day period in stunning pyrotechnics displays put on by international top competitors. The Grand Finale, yesterday, was viewed by 80,000 spectators.

The tourist season is in full swing, but the City Council of Blanes is still waiting for Spain’s Ministry of the Environment to make good on its promise to deposit 250.000 cubic meters of sand on the beach of S’Abanell. Delivery will likely take place in late July or early August.

In the first fatality at the Costa Brava coast this summer, a man drowned off the coast of Blanes yesterday, Blanes police and the Mossos d’Esquadra report. A lifeguard who noticed the swimmer was in trouble had called for help, but by the time it arrived the man had already drowned.

Five months after a devastating storm left a trail of destruction up and down the Costa Brava and beyond, many seaside resorts are still busy repairing the damage. However, all beaches have sand and are ready for tourist season.
Good news for Blanes-goers: S’Abanell beach already has more sand that it had last year.

The lifeless body of a German man, who was missing for more than a week while vacationing in Lloret de Mar, has been found. Initial reports say the man may have died accidentally by falling 15 meters down a steep slope.

Malgrat de Mar • crime:
A 26-year-old man from Holland fatally stabbed his girlfriend before turning the knife onto himself in Malgrat de Mar on Sunday.Police have arrested the man, who is hospitalized in serious condition.
The two were on vacation in Catalonia.

The city council of the Costa Brava seaside resort Tossa de Mar has adopted a proposed ordinance that makes it illegal for anyone to have sex on the beach — or, for that matter, in any public place. The ordinance also prohibits begging in the streets, prostitution, overly noisy bachelor parties, and the use of alcohol or drugs in public.
