VisitBlanes.com, March 17, 2009 — The city of Blanes is investing € 6.7 million in a major upgrade of its tourist district in the El Pins area.

As a result, the tourist area of Blanes – between Christopher Columbus street (Carrer de Cristòfor Colom), the Paseo de S’Abanell along the beach, and Mediterranean Avenue (Avinguda de Mediterrani) — will radically change over the coming years.

Avinguda de la Vila de Madrid, for example, will be transformed into a boulevard for pedestrians only. Traffic in other shopping streets will be greatly reduced as well.

Current traffic will be routed via Christopher Columbus street and Paseo de S’Abanell.

A parallel project involves the renovation of Paseo de S’Abanell, handled by the Ministry of the Environment.

Work on the project will take place in phases. The City Council will talk with some of the campsites along Christopher Columbus street regarding a proposed widening of the road — which currently is only wide enough to allow one-way traffic.

Work is not likely to start before 2010. However, the mayor of Blanes, Josep Trias, has said that the remodeling of the El Pins area is a clear commitment to tourism as one of the town’s major economic engines.
